Olympic Heptathlete to launch season at Loughborough match

Olympic Heptathlon bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton is one of the early big names lining up for this year’s Loughborough International Athletics match, sponsored by accenture, which will take place on Sunday 22 May.

Sotherton intends to launch her new season with outings in the 100m Hurdles, High Jump and Javelin.

The Loughborough invited line-up looks set to include several British 2004 Olympic team members, including Ricky Soos (800m), Andy Turner (110m Hurdles/Relay), Chris Rawlinson (400m Hurdles), Nathan Douglas (Long Jump/Triple Jump), Emeka Udechuku (Discus), Lee McConnell (Sprints), Mel Purkiss (400/4x400m), Hayley Parry (3000m) and Goldie Sayers (Javelin).

The home side will be buoyed by resounding team successes and records in both women’s relays at the recent British Universities (BUSA) Championships in Glasgow.

Among the new individual BUSA Champions expected to feature in Loughborough colours are European junior champion Rhys Williams (400m Hurdles/Relay), former world junior champion David Parker (Javelin), reigning European Under 23 champion Rebecca Lyne (800m) and national junior cross-country champion Laura Kenney (3000m).

Other Loughborough talents set to appear are European Under 23 4th placer Tom Carter (1500m), AAA Under 23 1500m champion Chris Warburton (Steeplechase), British world cross team reps Spencer Barden, Andy Caine and Gavin Thompson (5000m), 2000 Olympian Ben Challenger (High Jump), best ever UK 17-year-old Steve Lewis (Pole Vault), European Under 23 silver medallist Lisa Dobriskey (1500m), top female steeplechasers Tara Krzywicki and Sonia Thomas, and the exceptional new crop of Loughborough middle-distance prospects like Dani Barnes, Laura Finucane, Charlotte Best, Rachael Thompson and Charlotte Browning.

The Loughborough International Athletics Match is the traditional curtain raiser to the outdoor athletics season. This year’s meeting brings together teams representing Loughborough Students past and present, GB Under 20s, British Universities, England, Scotland and Wales.
