University seeks nominations for student community award

Do you have a good student neighbour? Do you know a student who helps out in your local community? If so then Loughborough University wants you to nominate them for a community award being offered for only the second time.

The Hannah Community Prize seeks to recognise students for showing acts of kindness, general good neighbourliness or making a contribution to local community life. Launched last year as the Community Warden’s Award Scheme, it may be awarded to an individual student, specific group of students or student households.

Last year the main award went to Marc Bull of Station Street for evacuating a friend from a house fire. The runner up prize went to Matt Barnes of York Street who helped a breathless and confused elderly resident back to his home and third prize was awarded a student household for simply being good neighbours.

The Hannah award is in memory of a former student, Mr George Alexander Hannah. A modest financial reward for the winner/s will come from funds bequeathed to the University in his memory.

Nominations for the Hannah Community Prize should be made to the University by Friday April 15th. A nomination form is available by logging on to
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/admin/ar/student/prizes/university_nominated/index.htm. An award ceremony will be held at the end of April.

Adrian Bailey, the University’s Community Warden for the Storer Road and Burleigh Road areas of Loughborough comments: “A great deal of my work is about encouraging students to be good neighbours. Last year it was great to hear the stories of this actually taking place. We are confident of more good examples this year.”

A number of prizes are awarded annually by the University to recognise the achievements of its students. The T S Shipman Prize is another that rewards community contribution, in particular the development of co-operation and aid between the University or Colleges and the local community.
