Olympics minister in Loughborough to urge backing for London 2012 bid

Tessa Jowell, the cabinet minister responsible for London’s campaign to win the right to stage the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, visited Loughborough today (14 February) to promote public support for the bid.

Her visit came at the start of the week in which a team from the International Olympic Committee will be in to London to inspect its sports facilities and meet leaders of the bid.

The minister came to Loughborough University to see the 50m international standard swimming pool and high performance centre, and talked to swimmers and coaches, including Paralympic gold medallist Jane Stidever.

London is the second of the five bidding cities to be inspected by the International Olympic Committee’s evaluation commission, whose visit is from 16 to 19 February. The other bidding cities are Madrid, New York, Paris and Moscow. The IOC makes its decision on which city will host the 2012 Games in Singapore on 6 July 2005.
