Getting a Headstart at Loughborough University

Teenagers from across the country will be coming to Loughborough University in July to take part in two engineering summer schools.

The weeklong courses are aimed at year 12 pupils and designed to give those taking part hands on experience of life as a university student, helping them to make a more informed decision about studying engineering at higher education level.

Organised by Headstart, the summer schools are part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s BEST programme (Better engineering students today - Building enterprise success tomorrow). Headstart runs 30 courses at universities across Britain, which cover different areas of science and engineering and highlight their importance to the world.

At Loughborough one of the summer schools will be aimed at teenagers with a general interest in engineering, and the other will target those specifically interested in systems engineering – the only one in the country to focus on this area of engineering. It is estimated that more than 100 young people will take part in the Loughborough courses.

Whilst at the campus the participants will attend lectures, work on design and build projects and meet other students, University staff and graduates. They will learn about careers in science, engineering and technology, how to apply for degree programmes and which universities offer courses in their area of interest. They also get the opportunity to take part in a variety of social activities and visit the local area.

Valentina Holt, who attended a Headstart summer school at Loughborough University last year said: “Overall the experience was fantastic and I learnt a lot about the numerous aspects and the options available to me at university. The experience encouraged me greatly and confirmed my initial decision of studying aeronautical engineering, as it included everything I am interested in and offers challenging career opportunities.”

Further information about the Loughborough University summer schools and how to book a place on them can be found on the Headstart website at http://www.headstartcourses.org.uk
