Loughborough and Oxbridge lead RAE sub-panel league

Loughborough University academics will chair the second highest number of sub-panels for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the higher education funding councils announced last week.

Cambridge University tops the league with six sub-panel chairs, closely followed by Loughborough and Oxford with five. There are 67 chairs in total.

The sub-panel chairs are experts in their field and were selected following peer nomination last year. They will be responsible for assessing universities’ submissions to the 2008 RAE at subject level and will make recommendations to the main panels on the quality profiles to award for each submission.

The RAE is the Government-backed national survey of the quality of research in universities.
Loughborough University’s sub-panel chairs are:

Loughborough’s vice chancellor, Professor Sir David Wallace, said: “I am delighted to offer my warmest congratulations to the five staff at Loughborough who will be taking on this responsibility.

“ This is wonderful recognition, not only of their research esteem, but also of their personal qualities of impartiality, integrity and objectivity. The appointments also underline the University’s position as a leading research-led institution.”

In 2004 Loughborough regained top position as the most research-intensive university in the UK for funded research work given its subject mix, according to the Performance Indicators published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).
