Students design outstanding corporate Christmas cards
Final year students from Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD) are celebrating as their exclusive Christmas card designs fly off the printing press. The talented students won a competition to produce a variety of innovative illustrations for Christmas cards on sale now through Loughborough University.
The annual competition is sponsored by the University’s business support company, Loughborough University Enterprises Ltd, Media Services and the University Publicity Office. Anna Seddon, Marketing Manager of LUEL, one of the judging panel, commented, “We are thrilled with the quality of the students’ artwork and struggled to narrow the entries down to just six. The chosen illustrations reinforce LUSAD’s excellent reputation for producing talented illustrators, many of whom have already had their work snapped up by publishing companies before graduation.” She continues, “An impressive 3000 cards were sold last year, many of which were sent to companies worldwide. This competition is an excellent showcase for the talents of our BA Illustration students.”
First prize was awarded to Andy Davies for his comic illustration incorporating a Christmas cake recipe and second prize was awarded to Chintu Shah for his robotic Santa and reindeer. Kelly Jennings, Claudia Page, Katie Wood and James Crossley each received runner up prizes for their designs respectively depicting festive penguins, a street scene, gift bearers and Christmas tree. The students received cash prizes and a printed acknowledgement on each of their Christmas cards.

The six winning designs are currently featured in the University’s Media Services official Christmas card selection, available for staff and students, local companies and members of the public. Company logos and personalised greetings can be incorporated and the cards can be viewed and ordered online at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/mediaservices/xmas/
Andrew Selby, Programme Leader of Illustration at LUSAD, commented, “The competition has been running for three years and is once again a huge success with our students. We are delighted that their designs are proving so popular. The competition gives students the chance to rise to the challenge of a real life commercial brief with a tight production schedule – good preparation for the future.”
