Loughborough University
Medal

Martin Tailby

Chancellor:

Martin John Tailby joined the University in1971 as Catering Supervisor in one of our student residential halls. In 1974, Martin was appointed as Assistant to the Halls and Catering Manager, George Deegan, himself a legend in university catering. He continued up the promotional ladder and in1979 became Senior Catering Assistant. By 1997 he was the University’s Food and Beverage Manager

His current role is as Special Projects Manager. In this capacity Martin is responsible for the catering at all university events. He has looked after the Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of Loughborough and other universities, royalty, peers of the realm and captains of industry. He has
overseen the refurbishment of all the campus bars and coffee bars, and made a vast range of innovations in our catering services. He is also responsible for provision of catering at Ford College on campus and for creating the catering arrangements for our new conference centre at Holywell Park. The range of University Souvenirs on sale today were sourced and put together by Martin.

If this was all, Martin’s claim for a Loughborough University medal would be compelling. But beyond all that, it is the manner of his dedicated and professional service which makes all who come into contact with him recognise that truly we have someone here whose contribution is beyond any call of duty. His attention to detail, his innovative ideas, and his skills have been channelled into his service to the University. Nothing is too much trouble for him. Over 32 years, he has made more people feel good after a visit to Loughborough University than any other single person.

Therefore Chancellor, I am delighted to present to you, for the award of the Loughborough University Medal, Martin John Tailby.
