John Jesson

Chancellor,

John Harry Jesson joined the then Loughborough College of Education in 1967, initially with a major responsibility for the swimming pools. As the Department of Physical Education grew, and with it the Sports Development Centre, John grew also in responsibilities, becoming Senior Duty Supervisor responsible for over 15 staff. Mr Jesson is now retired, having served the university with immense commitment for more than 30 years.

Despite an increasing managerial role, John would never ask staff to do anything that he himself would not do; he would be there, sleeves rolled up, helping in whatever way was needed. He is immensely respected by all, for his unstinting personal commitment, whether it was covering for other staff who were ill, in unsocial hours, for special events or whatever. John’s personal care has made a 60 year old pool the cradle of the national swimming club champions.

For all those who worked with him he is truly a ‘gentle’ man in the best sense of the word, and his pride in Loughborough shines through everything that he does.

Therefore Chancellor, I present to you and to the whole University, for the award of the Loughborough University Medal, John Harry Jesson.
