Caere OmniPage v9.0

Description

OmniPage version 9.0 is the current version of the well-established optical character recognition (OCR) package which is used to convert a scanned paper document into a word processor file. Useful where the only version of a document is on paper, and you need to re-create and edit it.

In a sentence:

Unlike the basic OCR software which came with your new scanner, this one actually works!

Comments

If you tried the OCR software that came with your scanner, found it was useless and gave up on it, then this is the tool for you. The problem with OCR is that 95% accuracy isn't good enough - you spend so long finding and fixing the 5% errors that you might as well have re-typed the whole document. Yet when you need OCR, nothing else will do. OmniPage is quick and easy to learn, provides good on-screen proofing tools and links straight into your word processor. Advanced features include the ability to read multi-column documents, tables and images separately, to improve accuracy. If your departmental office hasn't got OmniPage, you need to know someone who has.

Suppliers:  Widely available. Upgrade from any other OCR software costs £80 from PC World
