The pro-forma letter which can be downloaded (in Word '97 format) from this page can be used in situations where you are seeking permission to reproduce someone else's material.

Ensure that you are specific as possible about what it is you want to copy. Use page or figure numbers, and for video or sound use timings or frame numbers. The more precise you are, the smaller the amount of copying it looks - and hence the less chance of being charged for it!
