Amaya v3.1

http://www.w3.org/Amaya/User/BinDist.html

Platforms: PC, Unix

Price: FREE

Installation problems: None

Description: The World Wide Web consortium's "official" Web editing tool. Conforms closely to W3C standards, and contains a useful help file which is an important resource in itself.

Strengths: Conformance to standards. Comprehensive on-line help system. Handles equations

Comments: This was not generally liked. It lacked the precise control over formatting and layout that many of the others exhibited, and the user interface was criticised for not behaving as might be expected. On the positive side, Amaya will generate mathematical equations in web pages (for level 4+ browsers) and is a yardstick against which to compare web tools. And it's free, so it is a useful tool to hold in reserve for those occasions when nothing else will do. The on-line help system is a useful reference.
