Loughborough team reach finals of Biotechnology YES and win an award
A team of budding young engineers and scientists from Loughborough's Centre for Biological Engineering were finalists in this year's Biotechnology Young Entrepreneur Scheme (Biotechnology YES), beating off stiff competition along the way.
(L-R) William Bowen, QasimRafiq, Juan Guijarro Leach and Mark McCall; all students in the Doctoral Training Centre in Regenerative Medicine, set up a fictional biotechnology company, Scigen Biotech, which had developed a novel bacteriocin, Plurisin. Plurisin eliminates gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria as well as possessing anti-fungal capability and the primary application for such a product would be its use as a biopreservative, thereby increasing food safety and extending its shelf-life.
The team from Loughborough were amongst the 9 finalists, having earlier progressed from the Southern regional qualifier. The final, at London's prestigious County Hall, involved pitching the idea to a panel of investors in a Dragons Den style format and then responding to questions.
Whilst the team did not win the "Best Business Plan" award, other prizes were on offer and Qasim Rafiq, was awarded the "Best Presenter" award.
This national competition is run by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the University of Nottingham Institute for Enterprise and Innovation (UNIEI).
Civil and Building Engineering Students bring success for Loughborough
Jessica Van-Ristell, a PhD student from the School of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University, has won the Smeed prize for the best student paper at the 44th UTSG (Universities’ Transport Study Group) Conference held at the University of Aberdeen from 4th to 6th January 2012, whilst Irum Sanaullah, also from the same School, was also “highly commended”. Both students are jointly supervised by Dr Mohammed Quddus and Dr Marcus Enoch.
Building Energy and Comfort Knowledge Sharing (BECKS)
The Loughborough University “Building Energy & Comfort Knowledge Sharing” network (or BECKS for short) is promoted jointly by the Sustainability Research School and London-Loughborough Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Demand. We aim to bring together cross-disciplinary researchers from across the campus who are working on issues relating to buildings, energy and comfort.
The hope is that we build a stronger community of people at Loughborough who are interested in similar areas of research, but perhaps from different viewpoints. We now have over 100 research students, research staff and academic staff in 11 departments!
New members are always welcome and can join by registering on our LEARN pages. Here you will find an interactive forum, information and photographs from past events, a database of equipment that is available to borrow and even a link to the BECKS Twitter feed.
We are always looking for enthusiastic research students to plan, organise and run our events, so please get in touch if you have any good ideas, want to help out, or simply want more information.

Loughborough Students participate in British Art Show symposium
Vlad Morariu and Kuba Szreder, PhD candidates at the Loughborough University School of the Arts, participated in the seminar and PhD workshop "Precarious times". This was part of a rich programme of events which, concluded with the final symposium of the British Art Show in Plymouth.
Both students presented their ongoing research and had the opportunity to exchange insights and discuss their research with PhD candidates from Plymouth University, Lancaster University and University of Westminster. The results of these intensive workshops were presented to the international audience during a panel discussion "Precarious Research", which was part of the public programme of the British Art Show symposium.
Calling All Part Timers!
So you are registered to do a Part-Time PhD and you want to know how others are managing their research, or you have specific questions about your research that you think others in the part-time researcher community may have the answer to? Then this is the forum to use.
