Crime statistics
The figures below represent crimes occurring on University property that were reported to the Security Section during the relevant years.
One hundred and ninety four crimes were reported in 2010,a reduction of 59 (23.3%) compared with 2009.This continued the overall trend since 2003.
There were significant reductions in the level of auto related crime and cycle crime.
Auto related crime was down by 42% with 8 crimes reported compared with 19 in 2009.This reflects the investment in crime reduction measures across the campus and recently in the new multi story car park.
Once again the largest volume crime we experienced was theft of pedal cycles with 52 cases reported during the year. However this was a 27.7% reduction when compared with the previous year when 72 cycles were stolen.
Cycle crime is a problem at all UK Universities and Loughborough is no exception.Over the past three years a number of crime reduction measures have been adopted by the University together with partnership work with Leicestershire constabulary and Charnwood Borough Council. The reduction of this type of crime indicates that our compulsory cycle registration scheme and D lock service are starting to pay dividends.Once again no cycles fitted with one of our high quality cycle locks were stolen during the year.
Cycle crime will continue be targeted during 2011 with D locks are available from the Security Office at £10 each.
Our campus is one of the safest in the country but, as in any other community, incidents do occasionally occur. We work closely with the police in such circumstances.
The majority of reported crime is acquisitive and opportunistic.Unfortunately despite significant crime prevention activity by Security staff, the majority of crime could have been prevented if the victims took basic crime prevention steps.
Our advice -by taking a few simple precautions, you can help to make sure you don't become a victim.Take a look at the Student Safety link on our Links Page.
