Supporting Students
Seeing a careers adviser
Students can book either:
- A quick advice appointment designed for CV or application form checking and brief queries – bookable on the day either online, by phone or in person. These appointments last 15 minutes, or
- a longer career consultation. The 45 minute appointments give students the opportunity to discuss in detail any careers-related issues they may have. These sessions must be booked in advance either in person or by phone.
Careers advisers are professionally trained and have a caseload of subjects in which they specialise as well as working generically.

Employment Opportunities for Graduates and Students
The Careers and Employability Centre is targeted by a large number of employers and its website contains information about vacancies for current students and graduates looking for permanent employment. It also carries a wide range of vacation work and placement opportunities.
Careers Centre contact with your students
- First years receive emailed newsletters from the Centre alerting them to vacation work, where to get advice on CVs and other information.
We see students who are considering a course change and those who have failed their examinations or had their studies terminated. - Second years - where there is a placement option careers advisers run sessions on helping students to prepare to apply. All students are made aware of the resources available to them and encouraged to find some work experience. Newsletters and emails keep students in touch with key issues during the year. Both the Workshadowing Scheme and the Insight into Management course are aimed specifically at second year students.
- Finalists - careers advisers go to all departments at the start of the year to highlight to students the Centre and its resources. Finalists receive mailed information prior to the start of the year and regular emails about events. They are one of the main groups targeted for the skills programmes and presentations held on campus by employers.
- Postgraduates - talks to Master's students are given during the academic year. Postgraduates have their own careers information induction packs via their course tutors at the start of the academic year.
- Postgraduate researchers often have specific and individual enquiries and are most welcome to book career consultations at any time. They have a dedicated programme of workshops run by the Careers and Employability Centre through Staff Development and also the Centre's career development adviser for research students.
- International Students - specific resources include :
- A careers adviser with responsibility for international students
