Career Development

To ‘Career’ can mean ‘rapid movement in an uncontrolled direction…. Don’t let this apply to your career planning.

Around the middle of your PhD, or at the start of your Research Contract, we advise you to invest some time thinking and planning your future, your career goals and plans to get there. You can then make the most of the development opportunities available to you during your time at Loughborough University.

There are many future career options available to you, from continuing in Research (within HE or outside HE), working in the public, private or charity sector, working towards a career in teaching and lecturing or another role within University Management and Support. There is a useful resource for exploring Academic Careers, and there are a range of Case Studies featured on the VITAE website featuring Research Staff and PhD Students who have developed their career on many different directions.  Also case studies available from other Universities.  They can be inspiring reading and include hints and tips for breaking into new sectors and occupations.

Other tools you may need to plan and develop your career are advice on transferable skills development,  Networking,  CVs & Applications including Sample CVs,.  Also information to help you in academic or other job interviews, see also interview information from Vitae.

There is also a Loughborough Career Contacts database to put you in contact with previous Loughborough graduates or PhD Students who are willing to provide you with information or advice to people planning careers in similar fields to their own.
