Small to Medium Sized Enterprises
The Careers and Employability Centre at Loughborough University has a range of highly rated services on offer to employers. Our reputation for the work we undertake with a wide range of employers is excellent but we recognise that there could be a number of companies based in and around the Midlands who are unaware of how we might be able to work with them.
Our Services
The services we can offer include:
- Consultancy in terms of helping organisations raise their profile among students, graduates and research staff at the University
- Free vacancy advertising on our website which is accessed by all current and past students as well as research staff
- Targeted emailing to specific groups of students or research staff so that applications are received from the most appropriately qualified candidates
- Advice on the current graduate recruitment scene
In addition there are a number of ways in which businesses might like to consider working with the University to meet their business needs. For example they may not want to commit to permanent recruitment but the Careers Centre also advertises to students the following opportunities:
Opportunities
- Short term vacation work
- Project opportunities via academic departments
- Longer term placements lasting a minimum of 45 weeks and usually targeted at students in their third year of study
- Work Shadowing
- Mentoring
- KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership)
- Graduate Gateway
Students, graduates and research staff can add another dimension to organisations and the Careers and Employability Centre advertises opportunities for students at any stage in their academic studies through to research staff, who may have specific knowledge and skills appropriate to a specific business, and also graduates who bring a wide range of competencies to organisations. - Longer term placements
Many employers find the 45 week placement option is particularly appealing as the student will typically have completed two years of academic study prior to beginning work. The work undertaken will be at an appropriate level and the academic department will maintain contact with the student throughout the duration of the period of employment.

Placement students
Departments which typically have students who opt for the placement year include the engineering departments, namely Aeronautical and Automotive, Civil and Building, Electronic and Electrical, Mechanical and Manufacturing, Chemical and Materials. Other departments are: Chemistry, Computer Science, Human Sciences, Information Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, the Business School, Design and Technology, some Geography and Sports Science courses and some from the School of Art and Design. In other departments students sometimes opt for a year’s leave of absence in order to undertake placement work.
If you would like to discuss any of these areas further or to arrange an appointment for a consultation please contact a member of the employer team.
