Returning Students

The Careers and Employability Centre offers a range of tailored events, information and courses, targeted at students returning for the their penultimate and final years.

At Loughborough you have a lifelong membership to the Careers and Employability Centre, and the information, advice and guidance we provide is appropriate for all students from all years and all graduates. This website is designed to be used by all Loughborough students at any time. Different stages in your university career and your career development can require more tailored resources. This page is designed to show you what specific services we provide in each year you return to Loughborough.

Finalists

In the last month of the vacation you will receive a pack from the Careers and Employability Centre, at your home address, outlining all the opportunities you will have in your final year. These include:

Top Graduate Skills Course - The Careers and Employability Centre has joined with top graduate recruiters to offer a series of interactive sessions which will help you to develop the skills employers seek. On completion of the course you will also receive a certificate endorsed by the recruiters. This course is very popular, and is normally fully booked on the first day of the Autumn term. This course is also repeated in the spring term.

Career Management Skills Course - Career Management Skills is an exciting programme which will lead to the award of an employer-endorsed certificate upon completion. The course gives you the opportunity to get ready to apply for jobs effectively and indicate to employers that you have begun to develop key career management skills for the future. As well as attending 6 evening talks you will

1. Write a CV and bring it to the Careers and Employability Centre for advice 2. Answer three, from a choice of eight , typical application form questions or three 'real' questions that you are currently working on and have them reviewed in the Careers and Employability Centre 3. Complete the skills audit. Further details will be available on both these courses in your Finalist mailing.

Careers and Employability Centre Workshops - the Careers and Employability Centre runs workshops throughout the Autumn term on topics such as: Finding a job in challenging times, Effective CVs, Covering Letters, and Effective career networking / Preparing for the Recruitment Fair. We also run Practice Psychometric test sessions where you can sit a psychometric test in test conditions, and receive feedback.

For International Students there are workshops such as: Finding a UK graduate job: tips from successful international graduates, Finding work experience in the UK and Writing UK-style CVs and covering letters. Employer Presentations - During the Autumn and Spring terms employers and organisations from all employment sectors come onto campus during the evening to present information about their company to students at Loughborough University . The presentations provide a useful opportunity to network with potential employers and to find out more about their company from recent graduate recruits. You will also find out further details on what the employer/organisation is looking for in potential candidates and tips on how to apply for a position. Employer-led Skills Sessions - During the academic year employers also come onto campus to facilitate skills sessions to help students to develop employability skills crucial to the application process. These sessions provide students with the opportunity to find out more about the employer and to increase confidence in applying for positions. Careers Fairs - Each academic year the Careers and Employability Centre organises three careers fairs: the Graduate Recruitment and Placements Fair in October, the Spring Graduate Recruitment and Placement Fair in March and the Springboard..’a different careers fair’ in May. Hundreds of employers come on to campus to talk to Loughborough students and to provide information about their graduate recruitment schemes. See our Careers Fairs pages for further details. The Graduate Recruitment and Placements Fair is on Wednesday 27th October 2010 in the Edward Herbert Building and the James France Exhibition Centre.

Seeing a Careers Adviser - We offer two types of careers advice appointments. Quick Advice Appointments (15 mins) An on-duty Careers Adviser will check your CV, covering letters or application forms, answer quick queries or help you start your career planning. Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm Vacation times vary, please check for details Bookable on the day only either at Careers Online or tel 01509 222 039 or drop in from 9am on the day you want to come in. Or you can have a Career Consultations (45 mins). This is an appointment with the Careers Adviser responsible for your course. You can discuss your career options and ask questions. Monday to Friday 10.00, 11.00, 11.45, 14.00, 14.45 and 15.45. Bookable in advance in person or on 01509 222 039.

Mock Interviews - A practice interview with the Careers Adviser responsible for your course. These are for finalists/postgrads who have already been invited to an interview. You will gain tailored interview experience and feedback on your performance. Monday to Friday 10.00, 11.00, 11.45, 14.00, 14.45 and 15.45. Talks in your departments - For most departments, the allocated careers adviser will give a presentation during the beginning of the Autumn term. This will outline the opportunities available to you, give you the opportunity to meet your adviser and ask any questions you may have. You are welcome to drop into the Careers and Employability Centre if you have any queries.

Second Years:

We offer three courses/schemes specially for 2nd years. These are:

Insight into Management - This popular course is run by the Careers and Employability Centre over the Easter vacation, for second and penultimate year undergraduates from all courses.  The 3-day course provides an introduction to management using a series of business games and skills sessions and is highly regarded by employers.  The course is aimed at students who want to develop essential employability skills required by key graduate recruiters and find out more about careers in management. Visit the Insight page for more information.

Workshadowing Scheme - The Workshadow Scheme has been designed to enable second year undergraduates to spend a day gaining an insight into a career area, which they might like to enter. The scheme is particularly suited to departments where a placement year is not always possible for example: Art and Design, Economics, English and Drama, Geography, Human Sciences, Information Science, PIRES, Social Sciences and Sport and Exercise Sciences. Employer Mentoring - The employer mentoring scheme is an exciting initiative organised by the Careers and Employability Centre. It links home students of Black British, African, Caribbean and Asian descent with professional managers from a range of local and national businesses, to gain support and experience with their career planning. The overall aim of the scheme is to enhance the employability skills of second year home Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students. You will be contacted via email to apply in early Autumn.

The Loughborough Employability Award - recognises the employability skills you gain from all the activities you do outside your degree programme with 400 places available for first and second year undergraduates in 2010/2011. Preparation for Placements talk - For departments where there is the opportunity for a placement year, a careers adviser will come and talk to you and give advice about the securing a placement. More information will be available at the beginning of the Autumn term.
