How It Works
How does the award scheme work?
The Award is a points based scheme, where points are awarded dependent on commitment, level of responsibility and development of skills for each activity. On receipt of at least 100 points, a student will be eligible to apply for the Award by submitting a CV and an application form, which asks competency based questions similar to those on a graduate recruitment form.
Are there any compulsory parts to the award?
Yes, you are required to complete a self-assessment of your current level of skills and prepare an action plan to help you monitor your progress and the development of skills and competencies. These are available in the module in Learn and should be submitted by the last day of the term in which you enrol for the award.
The University is keen to promote both sustainability and the ability to be employable in a multi-cultural global environment. To meet these objectives the Award scheme requires you to complete two sets of questions, one for each of these areas. Ten points will be awarded for the completion of both. You are also strongly encouraged to be involved in activities relating to these important employability areas in your activities which count towards the Award.
What can be included in the Award scheme?
The skills you gain from voluntary activities or from paid or unpaid work experience will form the majority of the activities which count towards your Award application. You are asked to include activities from at least two of the following groupings, A, B and C:
Group A: voluntary activities, including:
- All Students’ Union activities
- Student2Student programme
- Student Enterprise
- External volunteering, fundraising
- Vacation volunteering
Group B: paid work experience, including:
- Students helping Students (ShS) programme
- All employment on campus (Students’ Union, Imago, Careers and Employability Centre and others)
- Vacation work since the start of your time at university.
Group C: other extra-curricular activities, including:
- Language courses outside your degree programme
- Chaplaincy faith groups
- Careers and Employability Centre courses and some workshops
- Counselling workshop programme
- Library workshop programme
- Engineering workshops
- Sport, music etc may be considered
The award team will consider activities not on the list on a case-by-case basis.
How are my points awarded?
For each activity that you complete you will have to submit a ‘Record of Activity’ form (which you can download from the award module in Learn). You are expected to describe the activity and to reflect on how that activity has helped you develop skills and has contributed to your personal development. The next step is to email the form to a designated person who will endorse your activity and recommend how many points should be awarded. You will find a full list of points and contact details of who endorses which activity in the Learn module once you have enrolled for the scheme. You should try to have the activity endorsed as soon as it is completed and definitely before the end of the academic year.
There is a completed example of a ‘Record of Activity’ form here.
