What are Alumni Career Contacts?
The Careers and Employability Centre maintains a database of Loughborough Alumni who have agreed to help Loughborough students and graduates with their career planning.
Alumni Career Contacts can help you by providing one or more of the following:
- Information and advice about their profession
- An insight into their organisation
- advice on getting a job in their area of work
- a short-term or one-year work placement
- an unpaid work-shadowing opportunity
- advice to prospective international students.
Contact with Loughborough graduates can be very beneficial for planning your future, whether you are in the early part of your course, a finalist, postgraduate student or graduate. You can use Alumni Career Contacts to get inside information about a career you are considering in the future, arrange work experience to confirm your ideas, or tips and hints if you have an interview or assessment centre coming up.
What are the backgrounds of Alumni Career Contacts?
Alumni Career Contacts work in a range of careers and industries and have a wide variety of experience. Some are recent graduates whilst others have been in employment for many years. As a result, some of our Alumni Career Contacts are on graduate training schemes or in the early stages of their careers and others are in senior positions in their organisations or run their own businesses. The areas of work represented by these alumni reflects the breadth of careers that Loughborough graduates embark upon or move into at a later date.
Alumni Career Contacts have volunteered and are keen to help Loughborough students and graduates with their career planning. The Careers and Employability Centre is continually seeking new Alumni Career Contacts, so the database is always growing.
What information is available about the Alumni Career Contacts?
The following information is available for each Alumni Career Contact:
- Name
- Employer
- Job title
- Job description
- Academic background
- Location
- Email address
- How they can help students/graduates with their career planning.
How do I use the Alumni Career Contacts database?
STEP 1 – Search the database
You can search the Alumni Career Contacts database on the Careers and Employability Centre website by using different criteria: employment category, company name and degree subject or use a combination of these search criteria. You can then see an outline description of each Alumni Career Contact, together with a Career Profile where the alumnus has given us permission to provide more information about his/her job role and advice and tips on entering their profession. Print off the Career Profile of the alumni who might be of interest to you (using the print button) as you will need to bring these details with you to the Careers and Employability Centre to obtain their contact details. – See STEP 2.

STEP 2 – Make an appointment with the Careers and Employability Centre
Current students can access the contact details of Alumni Career Contacts via a Quick Advice Appointment or as part of a 45 minute Career Consultation. [Graduates can arrange a telephone Quick Advice appointment.]
Quick Advice Appointments are available Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm. Times vary during vacations so please check the Careers and Employability Centre website for details or call 01509 222039. Quick Advice appointments can only be booked on the day you want to come in. You can book online from 8am using Careers Online. Alternatively you can book from 9am by telephone or in person at the Careers and Employability Centre.
Career Consultations can be booked in person at the Careers and Employability Centre or by calling 01509 222039. This type of appointment is useful if you have other issues to discuss regarding your career planning, but it is not necessary just to obtain the details of Alumni Career Contacts.
STEP 3 – Attend your Careers and Employability Centre appointment
You may have already identified a contact who you think would be able to help you with your career planning or you may need more help in with your selection. During your appointment the careers adviser will talk this through with you and offer more advice as necessary. You will then be given the relevant contact details for the Career Contact/s you have chosen and you will be able to discuss how to achieve the best results from the process.
Making the most of your Alumni Career Contacts
The Careers and Employability Centre has a leaflet available to help you make the most out of your contact with an Alumni Careers Contact. Either read 'Using Alumni Career Contacts - Helpful Hints' here or ask for a copy of this during your appointment. Our Alumni Career Contacts are busy people who are generously giving up their time to help you with your career planning. The leaflet provides advice on your initial approach, how to make a good impression and the importance of thanking them for their support.
