Transforming both wired and wireless technologies

Pioneering research – spanning almost 15 years – to develop Internet-based monitoring and control systems has transformed both wired and wireless technologies.

The work – integrating computer science and control engineering – has laid the foundations and best practice for the remote monitoring and control of both commercial and domestic systems, spanning industrial plant infrastructure to home energy efficiency.

It has also facilitated the collaboration of systems development teams over the Internet which has made it possible for in-service systems and software to be monitored and maintained remotely – reducing the need for on-site customer support.

To date, the technology has been applied to safety, security and energy saving systems; a logistic distribution centre’s object tracking system; and within an automotive manufacturing plant.

On-going collaborations with two industrial partners are refining current applications whilst exploring the development of new products and services.

Impact

  • Award winning 

    Winner of two awards – the Creativity Award International Exhibition Contest on Digital Signal Processing Creative Designs (2005) and the Institute of Measurement and Control’s Honeywell Prize (2010)

  • Commercially available 

    The technology has been adopted by Intelligent Distributed Control and Sure Technology, and integrated into several of their commercial and domestic systems – end users include Toyota and Toys R Us.

  • Improved operation 

    The industrial partners have reported not only improved design and productivity, but also increased turnover and IP value thanks to the collaboration.
