Gotrel and Walton on their way to Rio
With just over 50 days until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games gets underway, Loughborough University alumni Matt Gotrel and Jonny Walton have been named in the rowing team heading for the Copacabana.
After winning gold at the World Rowing Championships in 2015 as part of the men’s eight, Gotrel has continued in 2016 where he left off last year. Securing his spot in the same boat, he and his seven teammates won bronze at the European Championships last month, with Gotrel in the bow seat. It goes without saying though, that with such a strong history in the event, the eight will be hoping for better in Brazil come August.
For Walton, who like Gotrel will be making his first Olympic experience, selection is a sweet reward for years of hard work. Walton is a proud Loughborough graduate, with his father still working for the University. The Leicester man, who has perhaps taken confidence from Leicester City’s successes this year, will take up the stroke seat in the men’s double sculls alongside John Collins, after the duo finished sixth at the European Championships.
