Gotrel & Walton in line for Rio

Loughborough University graduates Matt Gotrel and Jonny Walton have been given an early indication that they are on course for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after selection for the European Rowing Championships.

World Champion Gotrel has been selected in the men’s eight, with Walton taking one of the two seats in the double scull. Strong performances at the European Championships, which take place in Brandenburg, Germany from May 6th-8th, will almost guarantee selection for Rio.

British Rowing has labelled the men’s eight as one of the strongest open men’s sweep (one rower, one oar) rowing squads in the world; whilst Walton continues alongside John Collins in the double sculls boat.

Based on that information, Gotrel will be looking to upgrade the silver medal he won at these championships last year, whilst Walton will be looking to improve on sixth two years ago.
