Infrastructure in Emergencies

A distance learning programme for study at MSc, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate levels

This programme has been especially designed for you as a graduate hoping to work, or already working, in the emergency water and sanitation sector in low-and middle-income countries. It will enable you to develop your potential and understanding of the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction, equipping you with appropriate knowledge, expertise and skills for emergency work. Understanding the demands on emergency relief staff, this course is available by distance learning.

  • Understand the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction
  • Develop the expertise and skills necessary for emergency relief and reconstruction work in low- and middle-income countries
  • Study flexibly by distance learning with the option to study some modules in the UK

Complete this programme and you will be able to:

  • understand the types of emergencies, their trends, causes and consequences;
  • assess, plan, manage and implement infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction;
  • appreciate the range of infrastructure needed by communities affected by emergencies both during and after the event;
  • describe, design, use, operate and maintain the range of technologies generally used in emergencies; and
  • work with traumatized populations to deliver essential services.

Direct entry

Lower second class degree (2.2) or above

IELTS overall 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in the individual Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking tests

Certificate programmes

If you do not have the qualifications necessary for direct entry onto one of our MSc or Diploma programmes, with relevant work experience you may still be eligible for entry onto one of our Certificate programmes. After successful completion you can normally upgrade your programme level, retaining the credits gained from your study on the Certificate programme.
