Why Modelling?

Today's systems are so complex that it is frequently impossible to fully understand them or reason about them. The favoured solution is to model the key elements of the system so that it is easier to understand for example complex interactions. In some instances it is important to model the system in an abstract way in order to see the bigger picture. However, this can introduce risks if the differences between the real system and its abstract modelled equivalent are not properly understood.

At the heart of all models is the need to continually refine them so that they accurately represent (to the required level of fidelity) the system being considered. Moreover, model verification and validation play a huge role in the acceptance of the model.
