Mr Ben Lane BSc, Sports Technology, Loughborough University, 2013
I graduated from Loughborough University in 2013 with a 1st Class degree in Sports Technology. During my third year I completed a Diploma in Professional Studies, whereby I worked at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research (CSER), Sheffield Hallam University. At CSER I was responsible for conducting research studies, most of which looked into the capabilities of the Microsoft Kinect for use in sports biomechanics.
My PhD project aims to improve the design of tennis balls through use of advanced materials and manufacturing processes. My project is in collaboration between the Sports Technology Institute at Loughborough and the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. As a result I was fortunate enough to spend a year of my studies in Singapore.
Out of the lab…
Sport has always been a passion and I take a keen interest in most but particularly cricket, football and tennis. I have played cricket at club and university level, and I’m a UKCC level 2 qualified coach. I have also worked for Hawk-Eye Innovations as a freelance football operator, operating the goal decision system for Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup matches.
