Session CGG-03: 'Debris transport and deposition by glaciers'

You are invited to contribute to this session at the 33rd International Geological Congress, Oslo, Norway, August 5-14, 2008.

The aim of this symposium is to draw together researchers in the fields of contemporary glacial processes, glacial sedimentology, ice sheet modellers and Quaternary and pre-Quaternary glacial systems. Contributions addressing the following themes are particularly encouraged:

(1) Contemporary glacial processes: debris entrainment, transport and deposition by contemporary glaciers, exploring the role of structural glaciology and thermal regime in influencing the style of glacial deposition in ice-marginal, glaciolacustrine, glaciomarine and glaciofluvial environments.

(2) Modelling glacial depositional systems: evaluating quantitative aspects of sediment delivery to continental margins, based on 3-D seismic stratigraphy and cored sequences; numerical modelling of former ice sheets and glaciers constrained by geological data.

(3) The sedimentary record of past glacial systems: recognising styles of glaciation in the geological record and the preservation potential of glaciogenic successions; examining the role of tectonic setting in the stratigraphy of glacial sediments; glacier-volcano interactions; Quaternary and ancient glacial systems including evaluation of the sedimentary evidence for the "Snowball Earth" hypothesis; the hydrocarbon potential of glacial systems.

Deadline for abstract submission is 29 February 2008. Further information on abstract submission is available at http://www.33igc.org

T1d: The Glacial Sedimentary Record

Tom Stevens & Catherine Rose

Sediments deposited during glacial or "Ice House" periods provide a record of environmental change during some of the most important periods of Earth's history. The aim of this session is to provide a forum for researchers addressing evidence for both contemporary glacial systems, processes and sedimentology and those preserved within the ancient rock record. We welcome all contributions related to the study and environmental interpretation of such sedimentary deposits; from loess of the Quaternary to diamictites of the Proterozoic.
