Self-Funded PhD Project – Disordered Eating in Disability Sport
18 May 2015
Eating disorders are considered a significant problem across a variety of sports. Pressures to lose weight for performance gains may lead to body image concerns and disordered eating behaviours that negatively impact athletic performance and overall quality of life. This line of research has focused predominantly on able-bodied athletes and we know very little about the presence and experience of disordered eating within disability sport. Which Paralympic athletes are most likely to get an eating disorder? How does the experience of disability interact with the experience of an eating disorder? Such questions will be approached, primarily, from a qualitative perspective.
