Events and News Conferences Helping Everyone Learn Mathematics conference HELM disseminated the final project deliverables at a conference at Loughborough on 14-15 September 2005. This conference, 'Helping Everyone Learn Mathematics', was run by the Subject Network of the HEA and two FDTL4 projects, HELM and mathtutor. Professor Celia Hoyles, Government Chief Advisor for Mathematics, gave the Keynote Speech. Over 130 registered for the conference. Institutions represented at the conference numbered: England 40, Northern Ireland 2, Scotland 5 and Wales 1. Continuation Strategy HELM has been successful in its bid for Transferability funding is supporting six HEIs to implement in different pedagogic ways the HELM project deliverables and to evaluate the difficulties, successes and failures. We intend to produce an evaluative report which will enhance the existing Tutor's Guide to aid future further transferability. The period of funding envisaged is from 1st October 2005 - 30th June 2006. Workshops Wednesday 23 June 2004 University of Reading The fourth HELM Workshop focussed on CAA issues and its use to drive student learning. Three different implementations were discussed firstly via Question Mark Perception 3.4, and, for those institutions not using QMP, secondly via the alternative assessment engine TOIA or thirdly via CD. Friday 30 January 2004 Loughborough University The third HELM workshop allowed potential triallists to try the HELM resources for themselves. In addition some current triallists spoke of their experiences of using HELM resources. Engineering Mathematics Examples and Case Studies Swap-Shop Thursday 29 January 2004 Loughborough University In spite of the miserable weather and dire travelling conditions, over 20 people turned up to participate in this swap-shop. The speakers rewarded them with some interesting and stimulating talks on a broad range of topics in engineering mathematics. Much of this material, both engineering examples and case studies, will be used by the HELM project to add interest to and support its mathematics learning resources. Visit LTSN Engineering's events web page for details. 24 June 2003 The University of Manchester (UMIST) The second Workshop for consortium members and trialling partners was held at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology on Tuesday 24th June 2003. The principal aim of this workshop was to recruit triallists for the HELM resources for the 2003-04 session. Workshop sessions featured: work completed and planned by the HELM consortium CAA and the HELM assessment regime and its implementation at triallists' institutions the role of HELM triallists and critical readers evaluation issues a practical CAA session a questions and answers session Almost 40 people attended and, apart from our project administrator and 10 delegates getting stuck in a University of Manchester (UMIST) lift for 30 minutes, the day was a great success! If you missed this workshop but want to be a triallist, please contact the project. 17 December 2002 Loughborough University The first Workshop for consortium members and trialling partners was held at Loughborough on Tuesday 17th December. The aims of this workshop were to meet each other, meet Steering Group members, report on progress, discuss problems and future plans and look at work in progress. News and Comments Although the HELM project is basically for Higher Education Institutions in England and Nothern Ireland, enquiries for trialling have come from Wales and Scotland and we have even had one from Australia! Dissemination and evaluation strategies have been developed A CD is now available which allows users who do not have access to Question Mark Perception software to try the HELM assessment regime.
