Workshops
  • HELM Triallists' Workshop
    Friday 30 January 2004, 10:30 - 16:30
    Loughborough University

The HELM project is developing mathematics learning resources in the form of Workbooks and web-delivered CAL segments whose potential is exploited by using CAA to drive student learning. Potential triallists are invited to this workshop to try the HELM resources. Current triallists are invited to share their experiences of using HELM resources with others.
For further information, email the project or telephone: 01509 227461
  • Engineering Mathematics Examples and Case Studies Swap-Shop
    Thursday 29 January 2004, 10:30 - 16:30
    Loughborough University

The HELM project is collecting engineering examples and case studies to support its mathematics learning resources. You are invited to participate in this Swap-Shop to share your own examples and Case Studies and take away examples from others - these could be short mathematical problems set in an engineering context, exemplars of mathematics problems in engineering (not problems to solve), fully developed engineering mathematics modelling problems or relevant CAL segments. Funding is available for those who attend to present their own examples and case studies. Some further payments will be made to those whose material is used by the project.

  • 24 June 2003
The second Workshop for consortium members and trialling partners was held at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology on Tuesday 24th June 2003. The principal aim of this workshop was to recruit triallists for the HELM resources for the 2003-04 session. Workshop sessions featured:
    • work completed and planned by the HELM consortium
    • CAA and the HELM assessment regime and its implementation at triallists' institutions
    • the role of HELM triallists and critical readers
    • evaluation issues
    • a practical CAA session
    • a questions and answers session

Almost 40 people attended and, apart from our project administrator and 10 delegates getting stuck in a UMIST lift for 30 minutes, the day was a great success!
If you missed this workshop but want to be a triallist, please contact the project.
  • 17 December 2002
The first Workshop for consortium members and trialling partners was held at Loughborough on Tuesday 17th December. The aims of this workshop were to meet each other, meet Steering Group members, report on progress, discuss problems and future plans and look at work in progress.

News and Comments
  • Although the HELM project is basically for Higher Education Institutions in England and Nothern Ireland, enquiries for trialling have come from Wales and Scotland and we have even had one from Australia!
  • Dissemination and evaluation strategies have been developed
  • A CD is now available which allows users who do not have access to Question Mark Perception software to try the HELM assessment regime.
