Research

ESRI’s research is typically applied (design or problem oriented), externally funded and diverse. We respond to invitations to tender for research projects on behalf of the EC, government departments and their agencies, we negotiate bespoke research projects on behalf of commercial organisations and we support PhD students. However, all our work is subject to similar levels of rigorous quality assurance and project management.

ESRI’s main research areas comprise:

Vehicle & Road Safety

The Vehicle Safety Research Centre (VSRC) is the largest crash investigation research group in the world. It conducts research into the causes of accidents and injuries in real world crashes and has made major contributions to European road and vehicle safety. Since its formation in 1982 the VSRC has conducted over 7,000 in-depth crash investigations and has made important advances in the science of crash analysis.

Applied Ergonomics

The Applied Ergonomics Centre (AEC) has particular expertise in: Mobile and Telecoms, Transport Ergonomics and Design and Safety. It conducts world leading research into products, services, equipment and environments to ensure they are ‘fit for purpose’, are usable and safe for the whole population. Combining the strengths of the former Research Institute for Consumer Ergonomics and HUSAT Research Institute, the Applied Ergonomics Centre draws upon thirty five years of expertise in the application of ergonomics in the home, workplace and on the move.
