Loughborough University are carrying out research to investigate manual handling throughout the life cycle of highway kerbs including manufacture, supply, planning and design. The work will examine current alternatives to manual handling of kerbs; explore related technical innovations developed home and abroad; look at installers' attitudes to changes from current practice and produce a strategy for design and installation that can be transferred to other construction operations. HASPREST, at Loughborough University, is a new project which is testing the widely held assumption that Standardisation and Pre-Assembly improves health and safety performance. The project funded by the DTI and Loughborough's EPSRC Centre for Construction Innovation, has just started and is still looking for further project participants. The Health and Safety in Construction (HASEC) Research Group at Loughborough University and UMIST are undertaking a
collaborative project, studying the causes of accidents in the construction industry. The project is scheduled to last for three years, of which the first year is being spent on information search. Later in the year 2000 we
shall start to undertake 100 accident studies, which will form the main body of the research. The focus is upon the contribution of the project development, management, site and individual factors to construction industry
accidents, and findings will be used to direct future best practice. |
