Caterpillar, Engineering Team Leader

"I studied mechanical engineering and have worked in the mobile machine industry since qualifying. Renewable energy is something that I have been personally interested in for a while and at the same time looking for a potential career in this field in the future.

I decided to study DL as I had to fit my studies around work. I was living in the USA for most of the course but wanted a UK qualification. Having lived in Leicester for a few years I was familiar with Loughborough University. It has an excellent reputation for engineering courses and was also only one of about three universities that I came across offering MSc:REST with a distance learning option.

My favourite part of the course was the modules that had course work projects which were based on ‘real life’ scenarios and involved working with third party software or virtual labs.  My project explored potential solutions to the prevention of food waste in grid isolated communities under the broad topic of renewable energy in developing countries. The project explored ways of utilising renewable energy to meet the needs of these communities using the theory taught on the course in addition to knowledge from other fields.

I was a little apprehensive initially about the time commitments and sacrifices I would have to make to complete this course.  I soon discovered that if you remain focussed and keep on track with the work that it is manageable.

I don’t have any immediate plans directly related to the course. I may in the future pursue a career in renewable energy. By completing the course I have satisfied my objectives of:

I found this course a very rewarding experience and would definitely recommend it."
