Dr Russell Bailey Gilbert explains how he used the flexibility built into our distance learning programme to maximum effect.

"I qualified as a mechanical engineer and after completing my PhD I worked for Shell as a project manager in the ‘upstream’ oil and gas business for 30 years. After retirement I wanted to get involved with the renewables industry, working part-time with a small company or at a university. I also wanted to keep myself active and expand my skills in an area of interest to me.

As I divide my time between houses in London and Cornwall I wanted to do a distance learning course to fit in with my lifestyle. Loughborough was the only university offering a DL course at the time, but I was also impressed by the breadth of the curriculum.

During the course I have attended lectures ‘live’ at the University whenever possible, staying at a local B&B for 3-4 days to cover a complete module (I must have covered six in this way.) I am now looking for a part-time position as a teaching or research fellow at universities in London or Cornwall and my MSc will undoubtedly be of direct value for that."
