A biogas plant

Alison Cartwright, is now Project Development Manager with CNG Services Ltd and Norfolk County Council (sub-contracted). Here she explains how she moved from fizzy drinks to biogas.

"I used to be Operations Manager of a soft drinks factory but after taking a career break to look after my children I decided to go back into project management and use my engineering skills in a new area.

I had always been interested in renewable energy and I saw distance learning as a way of allowing me to re-train that fitted around family life. I looked at a number of DL options but decided to study the CREST course since it has such a good reputation and is also accredited by the IMechE. The flexibility of studying for one module a semester also meant that it was achievable. As I had not studied for over 18 years, I was slightly nervous at the prospect but I was reassured by the Loughborough staff who were really helpful and encouraging.

The project module was particularly useful for me as it was an investigation into the economic uses of biogas for standalone anaerobic digestion (AD) plants and I worked with a company who were developing an AD plant and wanted to make the most of the renewable heat incentive. I also looked at the possibility of injecting the gas into the gas grid and this is the field I now work in.

Learning for myself was a really refreshing experience as I had a keen interest in the subject and for once the exam mark wasn’t the most important thing!"
