Sustainable Energy in Urban Environments

The majority of the world’s population – over 3.5 billion people - now live in urban areas, and by 2050 this is projected to increase to 75%. Thus, the challenges related to providing secure and sustainable urban energy services are by nature dynamic, complex and extremely challenging. With effective decision making, the opportunity to improve the sustainability of the global environment and economy through improvements in urban energy services and infrastructure, whether for transport, homes, offices or factories is huge.

Via our research here at CREST, we strive to make sense of this complexity via multi-scale empirical analysis, modelling and simulation within urban environments across many domains and sectors, with a growing role for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) modelling. A key aim of the research is to support more effective decisions by policy makers, industry, investors and individuals.
