Dr Andrew Urquhart

PhD Research Student

Andrew is a Research Student at CREST: the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology, which is within the School of Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering at Loughborough University.

Andrew is researching the impacts of low carbon technologies, such as PV, heat pumps, electric vehicles and storage, on the electricity distribution network. Future expansion in the use of these technologies may be constrained due to their impacts on the low voltage electricity network, as indicated by simulations and network planning tools. The objective of Andrew’s research work is to understand the uncertainties and approximations in the simulations used to plan LV networks, in order that the deployment of low carbon technologies should not be constrained unnecessarily.

Andrew was employed in the telecommunications industry from 1985 until 2012, first with STC Technology Ltd, then with Nortel, working on mobile cellular system design, antenna design, system modelling and product development.

From 2010 to 2013, Andrew was with AceAxis Ltd, leading R&D projects to develop new base station antenna designs, then acting as Programme Manager with responsibility for teams developing cellular base station radio products.

Andrew is currently a PhD Research Student with the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems at Loughborough University.
