Andrew is a Senior Lecturer in Power Electronics, at CREST (Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology), which is within the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University.

He has worked in industry starting as an R&D engineer for GEC Industrial Controls followed by senior engineering roles at Ultra Electronics, Alstom Power Conversion and Alstom Grid. He was a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham and then Lecturer at Manchester University, Aston University before moving to Loughborough University in 2017. These positions have involved the application of power electronics for industrial motor drives, aerospace, LV grids and HVDC.

Andrew received a B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Leeds University, U.K., in 1985 and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Power Electronics from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 1997 and 2002, respectively.

Andrew’s research interests are the application of power electronics in electrical networks for example LV grids, more electric aircraft and off-shore wind-farms. This work involves modelling and analysis, devising new power converters and control techniques. Current projects include:

  • The use of SiC MOSFETs in high-frequency converters for smart-grids.
  • A hybrid PV/battery converter using GaN transistors.
  • Switched-capacitor converters for high voltage conversion ratio applications.
