Dr Francesco Bittau obtained a First-class BSc Degree in Physical Innovative Technologies from the Physics Department of University of Ferrara (Italy) in 2010. He joined Loughborough University in 2012 enrolling in the MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology, which he completed in 2013. Following the master Degree, he started a PhD in the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) in thin film Photovoltaics. His PhD thesis “Analysis and optimisation of window layers for thin film CdTe solar cells” has earned him the PhD degree in 2018.  In parallel to the PhD a project as a research associate at CREST for the development of a commercially viable fabrication process for uniform thin film CdTe solar cells with Professor Michael Walls.

His research interests involve the material and the process development for thin film chalcogenide based photovoltaics (PV), with a focus on CdTe-based PV, transparent conductive oxides and non-conductive oxides. He is also experienced in various optical, structural and electronical techniques aimed to the material and device characterisation.

Francesco Bittau is a research associate within the Photovoltaic Materials and Devices group at CREST. His current projects are:

  • A commercially viable fabrication process for uniform thin film CdTe solar cells focusing on the pulsed DC sputtering of CdTe based thin film solar cells
  • Analysis and Optimisation of Window Layers for thin film CdTe Solar Cells
