CARM Training for Professional & Workplace Communication Encounters

Presented By Elizabeth Stokoe and Rein Sikveland
  • Burleigh Court, Loughborough University, UK

About this event

Who is this training workshop for?

The workshop is best suited to academics who have some training in CA, have conducted CA research, and want to run workshops with practitioners. Participants should have completed or currently be working on their PhD.

How?

The workshop will provide examples of its use in a variety of workplace settings, including mediation, police-suspect investigative interviews, medical interaction, and sales encounters. The workshop will be a mix of mini-lectures, practical activities and exercises, including hands-on work with recorded conversation. All materials will be provided.

Day 1 will focus on ‘what CARM is’ with examples of the method in use. Day 2 will focus on the technical side of building CARM workshops using relevant multimedia technology.

Who is running the workshop?

The workshop will be organised and led by Elizabeth Stokoe and Rein Sikveland. Elizabeth developed CARM and has won a Social Enterprise Award for her extensive work using CARM with mediators and police officers. Rein is a Research Associate with background in CA, phonetics and call centre research, currently applying CA and CARM to service encounters in health, commercial sales services, and hostage negotiation. Elizabeth and Rein have used CARM extensively with mediators within the UK, as well as elsewhere in Europe, USA and Australia.
