Toby Miller is the Professor and Director of the Institute for Media and Creative Industries at Loughborough University London. He is vastly experienced in this field and has numerous publications in Television; New Media, Sport; Culture, Cultural Politics and Film Theory. Prior to pursuing academics, Miller worked in broadcasting, banking, and the civil service.

Toby completed a B.A. at Australian National University in History and Political Science, in 1980. He also received a Ph.D. from Murdoch University in Philosophy and Communication Studies, in 1991.

Professor Miller taught at Murdoch, Griffith University, and the University of New South Wales and was a professor at New York University from 1993 until 2004, when he became Distinguished Professor of Media; Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside. In 2013, Professor Miller became the Professor of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Cardiff and Sir Walter Murdoch Professor of Cultural Policy Studies at Murdoch University, before joining Loughborough University London in 2015.Professor Miller is also a Visiting Professor for the Department of Social Communication at Universidad del Norte in Colombia. Professor Miller has also taught at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in India, as well as the University of Iowa, the Center for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, the Alberta Global Forum in Canada and the Centre for Cultural Research in Australia.

Professor Miller co-authors a monthly column for Psychology Today. He has also been elected President of the Cultural Studies Association from 2019-2021.

Toby has recently published a book entitled Global Media Studies with Marwan M. Kraidy, the Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Find out more here.

Professor Miller is a prolific writer and has authored and edited over 30 books, including 'A Companion to Film Theory' which received a Choice Outstanding Title for 2004. Professor Miller has also published essays in more than 100 journals and edited collections, including the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the International Journal of Communication and the Journal of Media; Cultural Studies. Professor Miller's latest book, Global Media Studies (2016) has already received international praise and is set to become an essential resource for students of global media and communication related programmes. Some of his works have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Swedish, and Spanish.
