Embedding circular economy principles into infrastructure
Closing date: 12 January 2018

The research project’s aim is to develop and validate a framework for embedding circular economy principles into HS2 projects through: a) assessing sustainability and circular economy requirements and processes currently being applied in HS2 Phase 1, and b) identifying and categorising HS2 assets and materials in relation to their potential for circular economy performance optimisation. The outputs will enhance HS2 stakeholders’ understanding and practice of circular economy, and help establish a culture of continuous improvement.

3-D Data Capture and Monitoring using HS2 Service Train Imagery
Closing date: 12 January 2018

The project’s aim is to investigate the potential of imagery acquired from HS2 trains to capture 3-D data representing trackside infrastructure. Such imagery and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry will be used to generate 3-D representations and monitor change. The research will address the uncertainty of spatial data quality derived from high speed camera platforms and will help to facilitate improved provision of information to monitor change in high speed rail infrastructure.

Innovations in Construction Quality of Trackbed and Geotechnical Assets
Closing date: 12 January 2018

The project’s aim is to develop novel and effective practices for site based compliance monitoring and/or testing to verify appropriate build quality of placed soils/fill materials and trackbed support. The research aligns with HS2’s design standards for high-speed rail, and aims to facilitate a step-change in construction assurance in respect of quality, risk, safety and programme.
