Programme Description

The quality and protection of the environment is a rapidly expanding subject area.  The Environmental Studies Postgraduate Programme is designed to encourage the integration of environmental science topics to meet the needs of industry, government organisations and individuals.  Choosing any one of the three routes available within the programme will provide a flexible and integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to environmental study.  The programme has been developed co-operatively within the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Social Science and Humanities at Loughborough University.  The following Centres and Departments are involved in the programme:

Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) 
The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
and the Departments of

Programme Aims

The programme aims to integrate the study of environmental issues, such as waste minimisation, recycling and recovery of materials, legislation, energy, water quality and provision, environmental impact assessment  within the context of manufacturing, business, engineering and science providing an holistic approach to the understanding of environmental management. 

For those students already working in, or wishing to work in low and middle income countries overseas, a selection of specialist optional modules are available.

MSc in Environmental Studies (180 credits required)

  • 2 compulsory modules (Research Methods and Professional Development Project

  • Diploma in Environmental Studies (120 credits required) 

  • 2 compulsory modules (Research Methods and Professional Development Project

  • Certificate in Environmental Studies (60 credits required)

    Optional modules are chosen from the following list:

    In addition, for those students already working in or wishing to work in low and middle income countries overseas, a selection of specialist optional modules are available through WEDC in the Faculty of Engineering: 
    (All modules are 15 credits)
    Most optional modules are delivered as short courses .  Please contact the programme director for information on specific modules.  Short course modules may also be available as Continuing Vocational Education courses. 

    Further modules may be added to the programme to meet the needs of students and employers.

    Assessment

    Optional modules are assessed by a mixture of examination and coursework.  Compulsory modules are assessed on 100% coursework and student presentations.  The Dissertation is assessed on the basis of a written thesis.

    The programme is suited to those who wish to either extend their knowledge in a particular area or broaden their field in order to increase their career prospects.
