Evaluation of Serious Case Reviews using the SCIE systems approach

Funded by the Department for Education (CWRC)

The Munro Review of Child Protection: Final Report. A Child Centred System (Cm 8062, 2011) outlined that:

in moving to a system that promotes the exercise of professional judgment, local multi-agency systems will need to be better at monitoring, learning and adapting their practice...[and recommended] that the ‘systems approach’ used in the health sector is adopted and applied, in particular, to Serious Case Reviews. This will enable deeper learning to overcome obstacles to good practice (Cm 8062, 2011, p.9).

The overarching aim of the evaluation is to review the strengths and limitations of adopting the SCIE systems approach in the conduct of SCRs.  An online survey has been administered and in-depth interviews and focus groups are being undertaken in two pilot sites.
