Evaluation of Taking Care: A practice framework for reunification

The NSPCC commissioned the Centre for Child and Family Research to evaluate its Taking Care practice framework. Taking Care is designed to be used by local authority social workers to strengthen the assessment and decision-making process when deciding whether a child can be returned home. It is also intended to inform and support work with children and their families during the reunification process and following a child’s return home.

The evaluation findings suggest that Taking Care is having a positive impact on reunification by strengthening assessment practice and helping families become more active participants in the process. Although professionals identified a number of challenges around some elements of implementing and sustaining the approach, the perceived value of the framework meant that local authorities were beginning to look for creative solutions to these issues.
