Incorporating Therapeutic Approaches into Learning Support Units in Nottingham City
Excellence in Cities Innovation Funding
The project is rooted in the belief that children who display behavioural difficulty can improve their behaviour if they are supported in an appropriate manner. This will then allow them to access their education more successfully.
This project was concerned with mapping the diversity of therapeutic approaches used with young people with behavioural difficulties in Nottingham City secondary schools, and identifying models of good practice.
It aimed to develop and evaluate innovative pilot approaches to inform future policy and practice. The research and development that form the basis of this project provide the evidence base for future therapeutic interventions and approaches. The project aimed to share knowledge gained about effective approaches through a coherent dissemination strategy.
- Establishment of a centralised database of current practitioners or organisations that provide therapeutic approaches via Learning Support Units (LSUs) or by other routes in Nottingham City secondary schools.
- Review of the relevant research literature on therapeutic approaches to addressing behaviour within educational settings.
- Assessment and evaluation of the value and effectiveness of the types of therapeutic services and/or interventions in Nottingham City, including strengths and weaknesses of existing provision and some case studies where appropriate.
- Identification of the therapeutic approaches to challenging behaviour that are employed in local areas. This information was used with data and information derived from the earlier phases of the project to inform the development of pilot projects for Nottingham.
