Loughborough University best in the UK for student experience
Loughborough University has been named the best in the country for its student experience, the UK’s leading publication on higher education, the Times Higher Education (THE) announced today.
The annual THE Student Experience Survey is based on the views of around 14,700 students from across the UK on a range of aspects of student life, such as the quality of courses, the support available and student accommodation.
As well as claiming the overall top spot, Loughborough was ranked number one in four categories: High quality facilities; Good sports facilities; Catering for personal requirements; and ‘I would recommend my university to a friend’. Loughborough Students’ Union was also rated highly, securing second place.
Commenting on Loughborough’s achievement, Professor Robert Allison, the University’s Vice Chancellor, said:
“The Loughborough student experience is truly unique and it’s excellent to have that officially endorsed by the THE.
“I’m so pleased for everybody who helps make this University the special place that it is, from students and staff to alumni and partners. Through quality teaching and support, extensive placement opportunities and employability skills development, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities, we support our students to be the very best they can be.
“This announcement is confirmation from our students that we’re getting it right.”
Jess Excell, President of Loughborough Students’ Union, said:
“What everyone loves about Loughborough is that community feel and that, no matter what your interests, there’s something here for you.
“By getting involved in some of the many activities available, from volunteering and fundraising, to sport, welfare and the arts, students develop important life and employability skills that enrich their Loughborough experience and set them up for life beyond the University.”
The THE Student Experience Survey, now in its 11th year, is unique in that it looks beyond the usual definition of the student experience – comprised largely of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback – to a broader definition created by students themselves that includes those aspects of university life that matter most to them.
This year’s survey also shows that students are becoming more demanding of their university with a general growth in their expectations across all 21 measures assessed. Results show that students increasingly value and expect good industry connections, high-quality facilities and good security while also working harder, volunteering more, and doing further extra-curricular activities.
