Positive start to academic year reported at community liaison meeting

The LCCLG brings together representatives from Loughborough University, Loughborough College, Leicestershire Police, landlords and Charnwood Borough Council with local residents groups. Meetings are held quarterly and the latest developments for the University and College are discussed, along with any issues of concern.

Figures presented at the recent meeting highlighted a reduction in complaints for both September and October compared with the same period last year. In September and October a total of 227 complaints were received compared to 280 the previous year.

A report on the operation of the Student Support Scheme was also heard at the meeting, with officers confirming that the complaint statistics suggested the scheme was having a positive impact on the number of incidents of transient noise.

The LCCLG also received a presentation from Professor Darren Smith from the University regarding a research project being undertaken for Charnwood Borough Council to map Houses in Multiple Occupation (HiMO) across the Borough.  Professor Smith reported that research was ongoing, but a figure for student HiMO in the Borough would be available at the conclusion of the research.

Details of the current University Travel Plan were presented to the meeting and University officers highlighted ongoing efforts to promote sustainable methods of travel and cycling safety.

All the agencies present gave update reports. The university highlighted progress towards a planning application for more student accommodation on campus whilst Charnwood Borough Council confirmed the appointment of an Empty Homes Officer. The Police explained ongoing policing priorities and the Students’ Union outlined recent successful fundraising initiatives.  The resident groups present updated on a variety of issues, including planning applications, waste related problems and licensing.

The next meeting of the LCCLG will take place on 8 February 2017.
