University’s police research showcased at launch event

A new research group that will work in partnership with the region’s police forces, helping to inform the way they work, is launched at Loughborough University this month.

The Policing Research Group (PRG) brings together Loughborough experts from a wide range of fields, including social sciences, geography, design, business and the arts.

A special launch event, opened by Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police Simon Cole, is being held at the University on Wednesday 17 June from 10am-3pm.

Policing in Partnership: Working With Vulnerable Citizens and Communities will showcase the innovative research already underway at the University between academics, the police, and practitioners in policing, social care and community safety.

Key themes to be explored at the launch include vulnerability, victimhood, communities and cohesion, the changing nature of policing partnerships, and effective working in settings including community safety, custody, and public protection.

Research presentations cover: safeguarding children and adolescents, community practice with Roma migrants, The Burglary Project (a study reviewing best use of security devices), and mental health care in custody and beyond.

PRG Director and Senior Lecturer in Sociology Dr Karen Lumsden said:

“We have a growing number of academics at Loughborough researching across victims, crime, and policing. The PRG will bring all these experts together to strengthen our knowledge in this area, and increase the work we do with the police and other agencies.

“This event will showcase our existing research and provide a platform for exploring new opportunities with partners.”

The event is open to police, academics, and anyone practising in relevant support fields.
