Centre for Biological Engineering

Our facilities

Fume cupboard

The CBE comprises a suite of Class 2 laboratories for animal and human cell growth. All labs boast state-of-the-art equipment which enables the Centre's staff to compete with biological engineers on a global scale.

Facilities associated with the Cell Technologies Group include a range of new culture vessels (from 150ml spinner flasks to conventional 5L Stirred Tank Reactors). Additionally we are equipped with Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting (FACS), fluorescent microscopy and state-of-the-art analytical equipment all housed within a suite of Class 2 research laboratories for animal cell culture.

Within the centre the Healthcare Engineering group has a laboratory suite that focuses on automated human cell culture and its optimisation and on the mechanical stimulation of growing tissues.

Equipment includes the first CompacT SelecT machine for automated cell expansion built by The Automation Partnership, a novel four chamber triaxial dynamic mechanical stimulation bio-reactor for tissue culture built by the Bose Corporation and a novel ultrasound stimulation system to improve process outputs in the culture of skin tissue constructs.

These are complemented by the fully equipped shared analytical laboratory including flow cytometry and RT-PCR systems and the separate automated cell culture facility with the ultimate aim of GMP operation.
