In 1995-96 there were an estimated 1,638 professional librarians jin schools - an average of one for every 5,400 pupils. Overall 12% more librarians in schools were reported this year. In 1997, a survey conducted for the Library Association estimated an average of 13.4 books per pupil in secondary schools, with the average number of book additions and books borrowed per year at 1.1 and 8.5 per pupil respectively. In 1995-96, Schools Library Services provided by library authorities spent £36.9 million - equivalent to £5.19 per pupil, and were used by 69% of schools.
